Debt Consolidation Tips

Are you starting to feel like you’re in over your head?  Don’t feel alone, lots of Americans are struggling with the economy right now and are looking for debt consolidation tips.  A variety of factors can lead us into debt; a job layoff or an unexpected medical expense or illness are just a couple.  So what do you do next when those bills are piling up and you’re starting to feel totally overwhelmed?  This article has a couple of suggestions on how to get a handle on your debt and start paying it off.

First things first.  Identify what debt you have.  Sounds simple and you probably have a running figure in the back of your mind of a general dollar amount.  That’s a start, but you need to sit down with paper and pencil or keyboard and laptop, whatever your choice of weapon, and determine exactly what’s outstanding.  Write out not just the general debt, but the interest accruing as well.  Whew, facing the devil was tough but now you
know where you stand in specific terms.  Sometimes just having the amounts written down and faced can relieve some of the stress of being in debt.
Second, identify if you’re a temporary situation and can pay bills off with some extra time or is this a more permanent lifestyle change.  If it’s a temporary situation your creditors will probably be willing to work with you.  Believe it or not, they’re happier to work with you and eventually get all of what they’re owed than have you default on the entire amount and get nothing.  Discuss with them what plans you have for paying what is owed, give them dollar amounts and time frame of what you can do.

If you are in a more serious situation where you need more help your first step should be to establish a relationship with your banker.  In these days of online banking we rarely physically go to banks anymore, but there are times when we need help from someone more knowledgeable than ourselves.  Make an appointment with your banker to discuss your options for paying off your debt.  They may come up with ideas you haven’t considered or weren’t aware of.
